Centrally situated on the Isle of Mull
Tiroran House is the ideal base to discover the isle of Mull. It is a deceptively large island and there is much to explore both by car and on foot.
Tobermory is 28 miles north from Tiroran with its famous colourful houses, whisky distillery, lively pubs, shops and harbour. Whale watching trips depart from here and yachts moor before travelling onwards throughout the Western Isles . Take the route from Tiroran along the West Coast of the island - en route you will see Inchkenneth, the island home of the famous Mitford sisters and their parents, Lord and Lady Redesdale - this view is among some of the most spectacular on the West Coast of Scotland.
In direct contrast - Head south and follow the road through the Ross of Mull to Iona which is 24 miles - with its famous Abbey, beautiful beaches - local walks. (Please see our Iona page)and you can take boat trips to Staffa (Fingal's Cave) where you will see puffins and dolphins, as well as whales can be spotted en route.
But close to Tiroran there is a special place. The track behind Tiroran continues to the remote Ardmeanach peninsula towards a rare and ancient fossil tree which is over 50 million years old. Macculloch's tree was discovered in 1819. This is a challenging walk in places, but an amazing reward - some of the most beautiful scenery is on this remote peninsula. The Burg farm was an experimental farm during WW2. This is a protected place and was gifted to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) by an absentee laird who briefly owned it for secret reasons. Ask Laurence about Chrissie when you come to stay!
Climb a Munro - Ben More is the only Munro on the island and Tiroran rests by its foothills. On a clear day, you can see the mainland and Ireland. Other mountains such as Ben Talaidh are also well worth the climb, the scattered remains of a crashed WW2 Dakota still remain - But you can experience all levels of walking anywhere on the island.
White tailed Sea Eagles, Golden Eagles and wild birds can be spotted on wildlife tours, along with otters and harbour porpoise basking in the bays, or the wild deer that roam the countryside. Guests last year spent the day with Bryan Rains (Wild about Mull 01681 704229) and spotted over 64 species in one day - this is not a unique event! All these animals and birds are local to the south side of the island, making this a very convenient tour for you whilst staying at Tiroran. Please also see our wildlife page
.
Fishing, stalking (in season) diving, whale watching and wildlife trips as well as golf can be organised on the island but whatever your interest, if you discuss your personal requirements with us either before you arrive or whilst you are here, Laurence can organise things for you or guide you in the right direction.
