Walking on Mull

You can experience all levels of walking anywhere on the island - not least close to Tiroran, there are lovely forest gladed walks, with no steep hills and gentle corners that present you with an ever changing vista and there is always a chance to spot the varied wild life and birds. There are challenging walks such as Benmore (Mulls' only Munro) or Carsaig to the Arches (a rough walk along the stony beach) where you may see golden eagles or wild mountain goats!

If walking is your passion, ask Laurence to advise you when you are here.  He will lend you maps and guide you in the right direction.  However, here are a few favorite walks on Mull.

Calgary on the north and Uisken to the South (towards Bunessan and Fionnphort) are both large and beautiful beaches. Both are sandy and on sunny days they can rival any in the Caribbean!  Wildlife abounds.

The track behind Tiroran continues to the remote Ardmeanach peninsula towards a rare and ancient fossil tree which is over 50 million years old. Macculloch's tree was discovered in 1819. This is a challenging walk at the end but a lovely stroll to begin.  In total,  it takes 7 hours at least all the way there and back but has an amazing reward - some of the most beautiful scenery on Mull is on this remote peninsula. The Burg farm was an experimental farm during WW2. This is a protected place and was gifted to the National Trust for Scotland by an absentee laird who briefly owned it for secret reasons.  Tea with Chrissie  www.nts.org.uk

Carsaig is a wonderful walk full of wildlife and fantastic scenery, just passed Pennyghael you will see a sign to the left, it’s a small and steep road but a wonderful place once you are there. Turn right for the famous arches - and left to follow the track where you may see wild goats, eagles and otters.

The beach at Tiroran will hopefully continue to be one of the best places to sit quietly and watch otters hunting, sunbathing and playing - and it's only a gentle stroll through the gardens and along the burn!

Climb a Munro - Ben More is the only Munro on the islandand Tiroran rests by its foothills.  On a clear day, you can see the mainland  and Ireland.

Other mountains such as Ben Talaidh are also well worth the climb, the scattered remains of a crashed WW2 Dakota still remain.
